WE STRENGTHEN THE NUMBER OF STEM TALENTS

High5Girls aims to motivate girls and young women aged 13-19 to choose a career path within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – also known as STEM.

We are an NGO and with support from foundations and Danish business, we make it possible for the young women to get professional and personal mentoring by female role models who are employed at Danish universities or in the business world, where historically there have been very few women. In this way, we create new narratives about what women can do, and open up a world of networks and exciting educational and career opportunities.

For more than 5 years, we have brought young women together to meet and to immerse themselves in STEM activities in their spare time. This results in the creation of social networks and according to their parents, the science community changes the girls' belief in their own abilities when they return to school – even in their free time and everyday life, where they seek out more knowledge about science and technology.

An external evaluation of the concept carried out by Rambøll Management, highlights how the young women see it as positive that the teaching takes place in an environment where there are only women. This is because in their own classes there are typically only a few women with the same interests, which supports the notion that the STEM world is male-dominated. But in this setup, they gain self-confidence and courage to take their place in the classroom, and this makes them feel much better equipped to subsequently apply for a STEM education.

DANISH BUSINESS WILL LACK 13,000 STEM CANDIDATES AND UP TO 22,000 IT CANDIDATES IN 2030

*Source: TEKNOLOGIPAGTEN*

We live in an age where technology and IT play a decisive role. But Danish companies have to look far for employees with STEM skills. This means competences within technology, engineering skills, natural sciences and mathematics. There is no indication that recruitment will be easier in the coming years. Denmark is at the bottom when it comes to how many young people choose a STEM education.

At the same time, STEM is one of the areas with the greatest gender imbalance. Today, only one in three enrolled in higher STEM education is a woman. A more equal gender distribution makes the recruitment pool larger, but it will also be of decisive importance for the technological and scientific solutions that are developed for our society to be diverse and representative. We simply need more diversity in STEM.

It takes time to train and become part of the workforce. It all starts with us together taking responsibility for arousing the interest of young women and showing them the good career opportunities that business can offer them in the future.

+ 100 ROLE MODELS

High5Girls’ role models are a central element in the way of thinking about change. Our role models pave the way for more girls in STEM. They can do that because they have walked the path themselves. They themselves have sat as the only girl in the class and experienced STEM as a world that you, as a woman, find yourself in despite. And they, like us, intend to change that.

TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE MORE

DO GOOD BUSINESS WITH ESG

It has gradually been confirmed by many consulting houses and Danish Industry that companies with a strong focus on social factors (the S in ESG) are better at driving innovation and generating income.

The S is your social impact and practice in relation to responsibility towards employees, society and stakeholders. It includes diversity and inclusion, supply chain ethics, community engagement and social responsibility. High5Girls delivers just that.

We motivate girls and young women to choose a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and in this way strengthen the supply chain for Danish business. Our STEM leisure activities take place in local areas, in municipalities and all over Denmark.

Rambøll Management has completed an evaluation of High5Girls in 2022. The main conclusion is: "High5Girls can help lift the societal challenge that consists of many girls losing interest in STEM as they get older".

With H5G as a partner, it is possible to lift social responsibility (‘S’) through donations or a tailored collaboration that matches your business strategic goals, values and resources.

Contributing to a positive impact on the labour market of the future not only strengthens your ESG/CSRD reporting but also your reputation with customers, job candidates and business partners.

STORYTELLING AND A NEW NARRATIVE

H5G documents and shares the positive narrative both for internal and external use. In H5G, we create a positive narrative about women in the STEM industry. We inspire more young women to choose the often-unknown career option. We do this by telling them about women who are already working with the technological solutions of the future at universities or in companies.

On social media, we share our YouTube videos, images and texts from the activities that we offer, such as science camps. The energy is high and it is clear that there is a burning interest in the STEM subjects, the cohesion and interaction between the girls and the adult role models.

We build a bridge between belief in one's own abilities, competences and action. If she can - so can I.

We are ready to tell the story of the companies that support the cause and help get more women to develop the technological solutions of the future.

We are actively changing this by getting involved early in the supply chain. + 100 female role models, who themselves work with the latest science and technology, show the way to new career opportunities for the next generation of women aged 13-19.

They make their knowledge and commitment available and participate both in the development and holding of our free camps, mother/daughter evenings, HTX boost as well as in debates, podcasts and networking activities.

You expose yourself and benefit from a strong network of women in STEM from the private sector, entrepreneurs and universities. Hear more about how you are already attracting more women to your talent pool.

WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER

First, we listen. The activities offered by H5G can be shaped to include and suit your business needs. We want to work together to develop shared success.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER EVENING – ALSO FOR BUSINESSES

These evenings are very popular and we simply love hosting them. Statistics show that in 75% of cases it is the mother who discusses education with her daughter. She is often the most important role model when it comes to support.

Mothers and daughters spend the evening with, for example, our robotic engineers and code their own robots. We share our experiences about STEM education and about job stereotypes, prejudices and how career choices are often influenced by what's around us.

Sponsoring this evening means creating a foundation for STEM education with fun memories, support and a relevant network for all. This can be a recurring business tradition once or twice a year as part of internal and external branding. Invite your stakeholders, business partners or others? We can adapt the concept to meet your needs.

Target group: Girls 13-16 years and their mothers. Format: 4-hour workshop, debate including catering. Location: Your company's location or at our partner universities. Price: DKK 23,000.

WEEKEND CAMPS

A camp is a 2-day event where you do hands-on experience with a technology and meet the role models who work with it.

For us, technology is always connected to the problem we try to solve. Therefore, you will also gain knowledge about the societal challenges that technology is trying to solve.

Our role models are often engineers and they have some pretty exciting stories to tell about their way into the particular subject. And maybe you can recognize something in their story that give you an idea of what it would be like for you to study or work within a similar area. Another thing that is also important to us is your ideas. Therefore, a Camp always includes an entrepreneurial task. Here you can let your imagination run wild and find – with the new knowledge you have gained – a product that the world could benefit from.

You will work together with the other girls at the Camp on the task and get help from the role models. Our experience is that the most fantastic products are invented. Finally, the groups pitch (explain) their ideas and get feedback. In the evening there is free time for fun, music and games at the hostel.

We provide transport, food/drinks, snacks and accommodation as we always find a sponsor who support the idea of opening the eyes for girls that technology is also a girls’ thing.

By collaborating with H5G's role models, you take on both environmental and social responsibility and create meaningful ESG/CSR goals.

Target group: Girls 13-16 years. Format: 2-day workshop with networking and social interaction. Location: Your company's location or with our partner universities. Price: DKK 88,000.

POWER TO HTX

"HTX," is a technical baccalaureate degree designed to prepare students for further study in STEM-related fields. A new generation of female students is ready to begin their further studies, but at HTX there are only a few other women. For them, it is crucial to be able to see themselves represented in the labour market that they aspire to enter after graduation.

H5G's role models facilitate a "level-based" training program where participants progress through different stages, each building on the knowledge and skills acquired at the previous level. The focus is on strengthening concrete skills and self-confidence. The project will also work across grade levels to ensure a community between the female students for the next step towards a career in engineering.

Sponsoring "Power to HTX" means taking social responsibility and making an impact in building a STEM workforce for future recruitment, competition and development for your company and brand.

The donation can be part of your ESG/CSR goals.

Target group: Girls 16-19 years across grade levels. Format: 1-3-year project in collaboration with HTX institutions and municipalities. Location: HTX, company visit. Price: DKK 750,000 per year.

SCIENCE AFTER SCHOOL

This is a series of 8 after-school activities where H5G role models show girls why STEM is both fun, meaningful and a great career choice. Through our role models, we have access to state-of-the-art knowledge and technology as well as a network of women to support the girls.

The training was designed by Mette Meltinis, an expert in learning and entrepreneurship. Her didactic focus is on the importance of competences, validation and support. Against this background, the girls delve into projects on topics that revolve around the 17 global goals for sustainable development with a practical approach.

To sponsor "Science in leisure time" is to commit to influencing a long-lasting passion for STEM. To build a "can-do attitude". We can even arrange "Science in the free time" for employees' daughters and the company's business partner.

Target group: Girls 13-16 years. Format: 8 after-school activities over 3 months. Location: Your company's location or with our partner universities. Price: DKK 75,000.

Marianne Andersen is the pioneer behind High5Girls. Trained as an electrical engineer, she has worked 25 years in the medical industry in business and product development, a career she has always enjoyed. She was the only woman in a class of 32 students. In the following years, she worked globally in the medical industry's large companies, typically as one of the few women among many men.

When she asked herself what she wanted to give back to the world, the idea of HIGH5GIRLS was born. The idea is to share the joy of STEM education and jobs with the next generation in order to achieve more diversity in the technological solutions of the future.
